Disclaimer

These maintenance tips cannot help you if you have improper power voltage,  hardware or software defects, or no or out of date protection to visits on the internet. These tips will improve general system performance and backup ability if performed at recommended intervals. Due to events on 9-11-2001 virus and security updates have become required weekly or more often!  Make them a habit.

Reboot weekly or more often.

Update virus software definitions weekly OR MORE!. Panda does on own. McAfee- Thursdays +, Norton- Tuesdays +, Or F-secure.  Due to events on 9-11-2001 virus and security updates have become required weekly or more often!  Make them a habit. Set them on auto update.

Delete c:\windows\history files

Delete c:\windows\temp files

Delete c:\windows\temporary internet files files

Empty recycle bin

Run Scandisk before Defrag. Monthly.

Run Disk Defragmenter after Scandisk Monthly.  (Not Available in NT)

Check disk space available monthly.

Backup nightly.  Backup everything !

Replace backup tapes twice a year.

Run windows update.  Is required for virus/security! . Due to events on 9-11-2001 virus and security updates have become required weekly or more often!  Make them a habit.

Run application update.  Call us first.

Update Operating System.  Call us first.

Replace hard drives about every 4 years.

Replace computer about every 4 years.

Linksys systems.  Turn on DSL or cable modems first, then Linksys device, followed by server, and pc's.  Linksys devices have a auto or manual firmware update option. Change default passwords. Linksys offers a firmware/software security package!

Use a program such as Malwarebytes Anti Anti-Malware. http://malwarebytes.org XP/2000/2003/Vista/Win 7/2008

Use a program such as Lavasoft's AD-Aware  updates and scan your system for Spyware.  http://www.ad-aware.com 98

Or Spybot search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html 98

Use a program such as a Microsoft Recognized Anti-Virus program. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/49500

Windows 95 98 NT 2000 and XP sp1 and SP2 and older are no longer Microsoft supported and unsecured. AKA Anti Virus support has also been dropped.

Download the MBSA security checker and use it to check for the latest security downloads from Microsoft. Stay secure, stay current.

E-MAIL

Avoid opening e-mail from people that you do not know.  Especially with attachments.

If the email does not sound like a e-mail from your friend, do not open it.

Do not respond to spam mail or ask to be remove from mailing lists.

Responding to a spam e-mail verifies a legitimate e-mail account to the spammer and then the real spamming begins.

BROWSING

You can get a virus or spyware just by viewing a web page be careful.  Keep anti-virus / spyware up to date.

AVOID

Search engine helpers that install in your browser, cute icons, screen savers, etc.  Make sure the company is legit and brandname.

Don't download and install software with advertisement unless its a major corporation.

Newest instances have you agree while downloading to accepting advertisements. These can take over your system just popping up ads.  Since you agreed to their agreement, Anti-Virus and Spyware removers, cannot legally scan, and remove them for you.  Beware!

Avoid Music downloads and hosting, for legal reasons.  Try Microsoft Media Player, Winamp ,or Apple Ipod as alturnatives.
